Scenarios and Narratives
One of the principal aims of the OPEN:EU project is to describe how we could move towards a one planet economy by 2050 and so an important part of the application phase of the project will be the development of future scenarios for consumption in the EU.
These scenarios will help us to understand how a One Planet Economy might be achieved by 2050. They will be developed to explore how consumption patterns and production efficiency might change into the future and where we might intervene with policy to achieve a One Planet Economy in each of these potential futures.
These future scenarios are different to the pre-loaded policy scenarios that will be provided with the EUREAPA tool. They are much more exploratory and creative – allowing people to imagine one planet futures and what role they have in achieving these futures. We want the scenarios to stimulate discussion and creative thinking by allowing people to think beyond conventional wisdom and live the future in advance.
During a two day scenario and policy workshop held last September, a scenario framework was developed by OPEN:EU stakeholders.

The project team have been using this framework to develop narrative descriptions of each scenario and they will soon be made available to the OPEN:EU network. An early version of the narratives will be made available for comments in early April, with the full version scheduled to be published in early May.
If you would like to be kept informed of this narrative work, or would like to comment, please register your interest.
We will be taking these narratives and quantifying their impact on the footprint family of indicators using the EUREAPA tool. The quantification of scenarios will allow people to assess the robustness of policy in the different futures and identify key drivers and transitions that will inform policy development.
